Making a Swiss roll, also known as a jelly roll or cream roll, is a delightful baking project. Here's a basic recipe for a classic vanilla Swiss roll:
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
- 4 large eggs
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
For the Filling:
- 1 cup whipping cream
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions:
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 15x10-inch jelly roll pan with cooking spray and line it with parchment paper.
Prepare the Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, beat the eggs on high speed for about 5 minutes or until thick and lemon-colored. Gradually add the granulated sugar, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually fold this dry mixture into the egg mixture, being careful not to deflate the eggs.
Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly touched.
Prepare for Rolling: While the cake is baking, lay a clean kitchen towel on the counter and dust it with powdered sugar. Once the cake is done, immediately turn it out onto the prepared towel. Carefully peel off the parchment paper.
Roll the Cake: Starting from one of the short sides, roll the cake and towel together into a tight spiral. Allow it to cool completely on a wire rack.
Prepare the Filling: In a chilled bowl, whip the whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form.
Unroll and Fill: Gently unroll the cooled cake and spread the whipped cream evenly over the surface.
Roll it Up Again: Carefully roll the cake back up, this time without the towel. Place the seam side down on a serving platter.
Chill: Refrigerate the Swiss roll for at least 1-2 hours before serving.
Optional: Dust with Powdered Sugar: Just before serving, you can dust the Swiss roll with powdered sugar for a finishing touch.
Enjoy your homemade Swiss roll! Feel free to get creative with different fillings like fruit jams or chocolate gauche.
